XILS-lab Brings Back Moog's Doomed Swan Song as MemoryTone

Monday September 14th 2026

XILS-lab has released MemoryTone, a software recreation of the Memorymoog, the six-voice analog polysynth that was Moog's last instrument before the original company folded in 1987.

Rather than simply modeling the sound, XILS-lab set out to capture the instrument's quirks: the way each oscillator behaved slightly differently from its neighbors, and how signal levels interacted with the mixer and filter before hitting saturation.

MemoryTone expands well past the hardware's original limits, offering sixteen voice polyphony with up to eighteen oscillators sounding at once, plus MPE support, an arpeggiator with a programmable sequencer, and effects including a three band resonator, chorus, delay, phaser and reverb. Modeled analog drift and voice-to-voice detuning are built in too, so the instability that gave the original its character isn't just simulated once and frozen.

The Memorymoog's original users included Jon Lord of Deep Purple and Jan Hammer, who used it to score Miami Vice, a fitting lineage for anything chasing a retro-futurist sound. MemoryTone is available now for macOS and Windows in AAX, AU, VST2.4 and VST3 formats, priced at an introductory 79 euros before rising to 199 euros.
