The women rewriting deep dubstep's rulebook

Tuesday September 08th 2026

More women on the decks, more patience in the sound - inside the scene pulling deep dubstep away from hedonism.

A wave of producers and DJs - Ema in Dublin, Beatrice M. in Paris, Carré between LA and London, Berlin's Darwin and CCL, New York's Introspekt, Bristol's Manami and a growing international roster besides - have spent the last couple of years pulling deep dubstep away from its hedonist, festival-adjacent cousins and back toward something more patient. Think submerged basslines, spacious low-end that swirls rather than pummels, and tempos that wander freely between 85 and 170 BPM depending on the night. Parties like Darwin's long-running REEF at Berghain and Beatrice M.'s Bait in Paris have become reference points, alongside newer gatherings such as Madrid's free-party-rooted Refractor Festival. Several of the artists interviewed connect the genre's growing gentleness directly to who's now in the room and on the decks - more women, more queer promoters, less machismo baked into the sound itself. It's a rare case of a scene's demographics and its aesthetics visibly shifting together.
