A surprising claim from the world of music hardware this week: teenage engineering's CEO, Jesper Kouthoofd, has said the company intends to stop making synthesizers altogether.
Speaking to High Snobiety, he said he told his team about the plan during a reorganization last fall, and that it includes the OP-1. In his words, the products are not the business, and the company can be so much more than that.
The statement has not been confirmed in any detail. teenage engineering had not responded to requests for comment from CDM or from larger tech publications at the time of reporting, so it is unclear what the shift will mean in practice, or what happens to existing instruments and support.
CDM's Peter Kirn notes that a pivot would not be implausible, since making synths is time-consuming, unforgiving and often unprofitable, while the company is busy elsewhere, including its work with Nothing and a new department store in New York. The news has also sparked a wave of parody videos from the synth community, which Kirn sees as a welcome bit of levity.
