Resident Advisor is bringing its RA UNLOCKED series to Hamburg's Reeperbahn Festival with a panel discussion titled "Local Scenes, Global Business," set for September 16 at Remoto Records as part of the festival's TRACK ID programme.
DJ Elijah, RA city manager Martha Jokiel and journalist Cristina Plett will spend an hour digging into a tension that's been building across the scene for years.
The panel's framing is blunt: as festivals and arena shows keep expanding, the clubs and neighborhoods that built the culture in the first place are facing real financial strain. Rather than treating that as an abstract industry trend, the conversation is expected to get into what local scenes can actually do about it, from building stronger networks between venues to rethinking safer-space policy and community infrastructure on the ground.
It's a conversation that will sound familiar to anyone running a label or a night outside of the major festival circuit, where the gap between "the industry" and the room you're actually playing in keeps getting wider.
