Suzanne Ciani originally wrote the "Buchla Cookbook" in 1976 as a report for the US National Endowment for the Arts, documenting the patching techniques behind her compositions on the Buchla system. Belgium's Orpheus Instituut has now published a digital edition through its ECHO platform, rebuilding the original report as an interactive resource with embedded audio examples, updated diagrams, and equivalent patches built in the free VCV Rack software, so nobody needs access to actual Buchla hardware to follow along.
The new edition also folds in interviews with Ciani discussing her compositional approach, covering pitch sequencing, modulation, and spatial techniques alongside the original recipes. Ciani has described her method in cooking terms herself: "In cooking, we take many fundamental ingredients and combine them in different ways and amounts and produce endless creations. A little randomness here, a pinch of FM there... Cooking needs to be done every day and it never turns out the same. That's the fun."
Collectors who want the artifact itself can still buy a scan of the original typewritten document for $1 through Ciani's own website, but the interactive edition is free and needs nothing more than a browser.
