Hermetic Modular's Capicola Brings Real-Time Time Stretching to Eurorack

Time and pitch are controlled independently, with pitch shifting across plus or minus twelve semitones and a grain size control for the stretching.

The unusual part is what happens under the hood. The module uses what the maker calls Extrema Sampling, which converts incoming 48kHz audio into a non-uniform stream of keyframes marking local peaks and valleys. Stretching, slicing and the nonlinear distortion all operate on that keyframe stream rather than on conventional samples, and a quality control lets you vary the keyframe density.

There is plenty here for self-modulating patches, including two envelope followers, external CV control, threshold-based transient detection with two trigger outputs, and a feedback loop with saturation and filtering. A true freeze is available through the stretch control, every knob has parameter lock, and there are 16 preset slots. Capicola costs 389.99 US dollars, is available now from the maker, and the firmware has also been published as an open source project on GitHub.
