Jay Pratt a.k.a Irrelevant is an English electronica producer from the Essex Suffolk border.
Jay began making electronic music in the early 2000's, inspired by his then hero's Radioslave and Swayzak. He began making hypnotic and driving Tech House self releasing a few EPs but mostly using it as a way to learn the ropes.
"I got a copy of Reason and just started playing around with everything, I realised pretty early on that I loved introducing reverb and these big spacey pads to a lot of house tracks I was making. That was probably the point where the 'Irrelevant' sound started to gestate."
Despite focussing his production style around the house music that he loved, he has always had an extremely eclectic taste in music, fuelled by his uncle who regularly used to bring him mix CDs of obscure latin, electronic and downtempo music when he was a kid. It wasn't until 2006 when the seminal debut album from Burial was released that Jay really felt the Irrelevant persona starting to take hold.
"I remember a mate of mine telling me about the really cool new artist that he had been listening to called Burial, so I got the album and it was like a new awakening. I never really had that artist that I could listen to over and over before, not like some of my friends had when they were growing up, but when Burial came along - it was like, shit, this album is actually made for me. The emotion in it just instantly connected with me."
Along with Burial, Jay cites the likes of Synkro, Clubroot, The Cinematic Orchestra, Asa Chang & Junray and Afterlife and his main inpisrations.
In the past 9 years he has released 3 LPs, multiple singles and EPs and played nights at Fabric in London, Berlin and more. He now runs the show at Absolute Loss and is an artist for the amazing Kokeshi label.
