Elektron has told users it will stop permitting the sharing of firmware hacks and modifications on its official Elektronauts forum and across its social media channels.
The Swedish manufacturer says it's taking "a firmer position on material that facilitates or promotes unauthorised firmware modification," which covers posting the files, tools, repositories, or instructions themselves, not just discussing them in general terms.
The company pointed to a recent spike in custom firmware projects, many of which it believes were built with AI assistance, appearing for both current and older Elektron machines. Its concern is twofold, that firmware which hasn't been properly tested can damage hardware, and that hosting links to that material on official channels made it look like Elektron was endorsing every project, when it wasn't.
General conversation about firmware modification is still allowed, and the change doesn't touch arrangements Elektron has already sanctioned, including the Machinedrum X firmware. Other third-party projects will now be judged case by case rather than assumed acceptable.
For a community that's long treated hacking Elektron boxes as part of the culture, from tuning oddities to entirely new sequencer behaviour, the policy marks a shift from tacit tolerance to active moderation, even as the company insists it isn't trying to shut the practice down outright.
