Dark Heart Recordings label head Brett Butler (a.k.a Greencyde) and Urs Wild (a.k.a Auel) join forces under their 'Killed By Crows' moniker to offer up their first full length LP 'A Place In Space' this Friday 1st September via the aforementioned Dark Heart imprint.
Brett kindly send me across a copy of the full LP in it's 'gapless' guise - the album is designed to be listened to as one without any space between tracks and it's easy to see why.
At just over an hour in length, the time has flown by, stunning atmospheric work, including some Gregorian chanting, haunting female vocals overlaying a beautifully light amen break and samples of what I picture to be a craggy, grey and moody coastline (with resident crows cawing away), set the scene for a listening experience that goes beyond just enjoying an electronic music album.
I'm not even sure I can legitimately class this as Future Garage either - it's sits, somewhere else, you can certainly glean echoes of it, but we're also hearing elements of Dream Punk, Drone, Foley FX work that is cinematic in it's execution and of course the divinity of the monks in chorus provide further uniqueness to the foundation of where this album resides genre wise.
When we get beats they are a mix of live-sounding syncopation, old skool breakbeats or soft suggestions of rhythm and percussion that hide expertly in the background of the productions, just offering up a heartbeat to carry the sonics of the melody through to conclusion.
In places it's almost like crafted silence, strange though that is as a descriptive term, the soundscapes are so stunningly delicate that to label them as music feels like its not enough.
'A Place In Space' deftly demonstrates the ability of these two artists to come together and create something stunningly beautiful. An hour of headphone music for the thinkers and the ravers alike, this one is going straight in the favourites folder.
'A Place In Space' is out now on Dark Heart Recordings. Grab your copy here.
