Interview: Bimbotronic

A mysterious future garage legend. Making music for over ten years and a favourite of Irrelevant. We caught up with Bimbotronic ahead of his debut release on Absolute Loss to find out a bit more about this enigmatic character.

AL: First off, the question that no one seems to like to answer...tell us a bit about yourself.

B: I always wanted to create music, from the age of 14, when I first heard the Prodigy, I wanted to do something like that, so I took cassettes and recorded different sounds or melodies from the radio on them and tried to mix something.

AL: Who would you say are your main influences?

B: Many people have influenced my work. Firstly, my good friend, an Italian DJ, who introduced me to FL Studio in 2005, at that time I was listening to minimal house and electronica like Trentemoller, but in 2006 I heard the debut album from Burial, and in 2007 his second album Untrue, after which I wanted to create music in this genre. So I would say my main influence is Burial.

AL: What are your earliest memories of hearing electronic music? What got you interested in it?

B: My earliest memories are, of course, The Prodigy, who I listened to on repeat, I also listened to old school jungle and breakbeat and then artists like Massive Attack and Portishead, they all shaped my taste in electronic music.

I think they all interested me with their punchy and powerful beats and percussion especially The Prodigy and Chemical Brothers. Massive Attack, Unkle, and Portishead all had mystical vibes, atmospheres, and sadness which is all a theme that I loved.

AL: Can you tell us how what your production process is?

B: Nothing special, just an irresistible desire to make music, I get great pleasure from this process, for me, it's a kind of meditation.

AL: Which part of production do you find the hardest?

B: I don't think about what I find, hardest. I think you just need to have some patience and desire and eventually, everything will work out. But if I had to pick something, I think it's mastering.

AL: What is the story behind the Pandora EP?

B: All the tracks were written somewhat spontaneously, but with a great desire to create something special and mysterious.

It's a collection of things that have influenced me in recent years and what I have working on for a long time, it's a culmination of hundreds of sketches that I stopped liking after a couple of days and threw them out, but then eventually came to back to create Pandora.

AL: What can we expect from you in the future?

B: I don't know, but I will keep doing what I love!

AL: Can you tell us about 5 Albums/Releases from other artists that you are into right now?

B: To be honest, at the moment, nothing... That is, I re-listen for periods. For example, in Spring and Summer, I like to listen to Jon Hopkin's Immunity and Singularity, constantly on repeat.

In winter, I will listen to Burial or Massive attack (100th window), different ambient tracks, and other, similar stuff.

So my list would be:
Jon Hopkins- Singularity
Jon Hopkins - Immunity
Burial - Untrue, Burial and Antidawn
Future sound of London -  Omnipresence
Thom Yorke - Anima

AL: And how about 5 of your favourite pieces of album artwork?

B: For me, it's always Burial - Untrue artwork and Antidawn. Massive Attack 100th Window. Trentemoller - The Last Resort artwork and Singularity by Jon Hopkins...but I think a new favorite is the artwork for Pandora!
