The Operator Sound INC. - Esoteric Audio For Space Age Witchcraft
Modular synths and vintage organ on tape, channelling 1970s space-age library music through a deliberately occult lens.

The title is a promise and the album keeps it. The Operator Sound INC. arrives with a debut LP of exactly the kind of music its name suggests: someone at a cosmic switchboard, routing calls between this world and several others, all of it committed to tape with vintage electronic organs, modular synthesisers, and what the press notes blandly describe as “primitive rhythm machines.” The result is 34 minutes of space-age library music that has been left out in the dark for too long and developed something.

The concept is unified to an almost comedic degree, but the execution saves it from mere pastiche. Track titles like “Space Age Switchboard (Please Hold)”, “Cosmic Crosstalk (Crossed Wires)”, and “L’Appel Intergalactique” build a running metaphor around telephony and interplanetary transmission, as if the record is an operator log from a switchboard connecting planets rather than offices. “Appel en Attente (Call Waiting)” is the deadpan comedy of it: functional hold music for a call you placed to the solar system, now buffering somewhere past Jupiter.

But the album earns its second listen through texture rather than concept. Recorded straight to analog tape, everything here has the warm compression and edge-softening that makes 1960s and 70s library recordings so compulsively listenable. “The Lunar Loop” builds a hypnotic ostinato that would have sat comfortably on a Bruton or KPM reel, while “Planet Moog” leans into its own title joke and delivers exactly the kind of oscillating, pitch-drifting synthesiser figure the name implies, without irony and without winking at you about it. “Interplanetary Incantation” is the record’s most genuinely strange moment, where the lounge music surface gives way to something that feels less like library music and more like ritual, the organ chords stretching into drone territory before a rhythm machine taps everything back into line.

Library of the Occult has built a catalogue around exactly this kind of material, the overlap between occult aesthetics and the more speculative end of vintage electronics, and The Operator Sound INC. fits the series with precision. What makes the album work is the same thing that makes good library music work in general: there is no filler, no wasted space, no track that outstays its welcome. The shortest piece runs 45 seconds and feels complete. The longest, the title track “Esoteric Space Age Witchcraft” at 4 minutes 22, earns every second of it.

This is a record that knows exactly what it wants to be, and gets there by the most pleasurable route available. Strange, warm, and just peculiar enough to hold your attention well past a single visit.
