Introducing Darlynn, an Oakland-based duo - Daria Lourd (aka Bored Lord) and her wife, vocalist Jaelynn Walls.
On my first listen of Dyke Den (there have been many now). I was, for some reason, reminded of the first time I listened to work by Syd of The Internet fame. Thematically it would be obvious to pull out the similar threads of lesbian love and longing (indeed this is how Dyke Den is actually described in the release notes) but I think it runs deeper than that. The pure emotion that sits behind the story telling in the work is telling of how personal this release is to Daria and Jaelynn and it's this emotion that means that as we are carried through a variety of genres, the tracklist on Dyke Den really is all killer, no filler.
The (just over) half an hour listen is comprised of a variety of genres, kicking off with a baltimore/bass music inspired uplifter Make Yr Move then things get a little slower with Girl 2 Girl. The Feeling is almost dreampop in it's execution and the catchy lyrics "It's yours to feel, the feelings real" of the chorus, were going around in my head all afternoon.
On My Side is a minimal number, staccato vocals and a simple 808 snare are supported with soft pads that languish in the background but add their own layer of feel.
Can't Sleep is where the LP opens itself up with a big tumbling drumline, growly guitar synth and some hazy keys whilst Jaelynn's distorted vocals effortlessly layer themselves over it all.
Like A Summer positions itself somewhere in the realms house music with feel good piano stabs and the return of the 808 percussion. It feels like we are really celebrating the love that has been pursued up until this point now.
Alright With Me slows us back down again and confirms that as the title would suggest, this relationship is going in all the right directions.
Love Letter is the personal 'sealed with a kiss' track that rounds out Dyke Den and cements it as just a lovely, well executed expression of love between two souls, who just happen to be talented musicians to boot!
